The Balliol College Master’s Field development is a transformative architectural project that expands the college’s student accommodation and facilities. The development comprises eight purpose-built student accommodation buildings, a visiting professorial flat, and a centrally located sports pavilion. By incorporating new landscapes, including quadrangles, tree-lined paths, and planted borders, the project enhances the college’s environment while ensuring a cohesive relationship with its historical setting.
The primary reason for the development was to enable Balliol College to accommodate its entire undergraduate intake on-site. This shift allows students to remain within the college grounds throughout their studies, enhancing their sense of community and proximity to academic resources. Alongside this, the project includes recreational and athletic facilities to further enrich student life, including a sports pavilion with a cricket pitch, squash court, and multi-purpose hall.
The architectural design of the Master’s Field development embraces modernity while staying true to the traditional heritage of Balliol College. The concept was to create buildings that reflect current architectural trends yet respect the surrounding historical landmarks. The clean lines, open spaces, and subtle use of materials like the Traditional Brick & Stone Mystique brick allow the development to stand out without overwhelming its historic backdrop.
